FUEL MANAGEMENT FLOW SHIELD - Frequently Asked Questions
The Fuel Shield system consists of a special flow meter, a display unit, an a wireless communication module together with a web reporting application.
There are two basic ways to measure directly engine fuel consumption. The Direct method does not return the fuel to the tank. Instead the return flow is redirected to the fuel circulation flow of the injection circuit. The second method is the Differential method which requires one flow meter to measure the supply flow of fuel to the engine and a second flow meter to measure the return flow to the tank. Net consumption is arrived by calculating the differential.
Fuel Shield uses the direct method which is the best measuring solution for diesel engines. This method allows a true measurement of the fuel flow, with uncertainty better than +/- 1 % (+/- 0.2 % repeatability). By comparison differential fuel flow allows only for accuracy of 5 % (at best). Fuel Shield uses high pulse rate output. The control and pulse technology is based on the latest SMD technology and is molded to be water tight and vibration resistant. This allows high pulse count per flow quantity unit.
Fuel Shield uses rotary piston technology considered by many as the most reliable volumetric flow meter technology currently existing, with less wear and moving parts. The rotary piston technology fits the fuel consumption measuring principle perfectly; a single moving piston oscillates softly in a measuring chamber protected by a thin layer of fuel maintaining the piston self floating. This allows the meter to have minimal mechanical friction. Under normal working conditions the pressure loss ahead of the meter is less than 100 mbar.
